August 3-5: Park Day Reunion takes place at Silver Springs Park, bringing together friends and family from Springfield and around the country. The event name dates back to 1952, when Gerald Brooks, a teacher at Springfield’s Lincoln School, started a day of games and sports for young black residents at Silver Springs. 10 a.m.- 8 p.m., 1100 N. August 10-11: Birthplace of Route 66 Festival & Car Show. Talmage St. Free. Honoring the iconic Mother Road of America – Route 66. Join thousands of visitors from across the country and around the world as they celebrate an authentic slice of Americana. Attendees get an up-close look at hundreds of classic, fully restored automobiles and motorcycles lining downtown Shaun Munday streets. Events include pre-parade party, a two-day car and motorcycle show, a Gypsy Tour motorcycle poker run, the Birthplace of Route 66 Festival Signature Concert Series, free live music at Park Central Square and Jordan Valley Park, an outdoor movie, vendor villages, a 6.6K/3.3K run/walk and the annual two-day convention of Route 66 authors, artists, collectors and associations. CONCERT AT THE CAVE
August 18: Noon to 6pm. A family-friendly afternoon in Doling Park. Live music includes Shaun Munday, 83 Skidoo, Kevin and Mike and more, performing just outside Doling Park’s Giboney Cave. Cave tours, kid’s interactive art, games and bounce house. Play It Forward collects musical instruments for students. Doling Park and Family Center, 301 E. Talmage St. Free
August 16: The Main Event sports trivia contest. Think you know sports? Want to watch a living legend in action? This is your night. Teams will compete in 10 unique sports categories for cash prizes. There will be 10 questions in each category for a total of 100. The best part, even better than cash? Ned Reynolds will emcee the event. Other local sports bigwigs, including Art Hains — the voice of the Bears — will be celebrity judges. 6:30 p.m., Sertoma Event Center, 1645 W. Republic Road. Price: $300 for a team of 6-10 players. August 25: 13th annual Festival of the Nations. Taste foods from around the world. Enjoy international music and dance performances. Food tickets are a dollar each; cost of each dish is 1-3 tickets depending on the dish. Children’s area with games and equipment. Drawings for TV and iPad. Nations represented in past events include Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Japan, Mexico, Slovakia, Peru, United States, and Venezuela. 5-9 p.m., Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1609 N.
